Your Mental Health Talk Radio
What’s your homebased business?
Your Mental Health Talk Radio is a one-hour radio program that airs 6 days a week to an audience of more than 200,000 listeners in the US and Canada and discusses any and all topics that effect us physically, mentally and emotionally with the top medical experts in the world.
How did you come up with this business idea?
After the death of my son Matthew on Janurary 27, 2000 I went into a major depression and even attempted suicide. I recieved some of the worst psychiatric care even though my own father was a primary care physician. I wanted to make sure that no one who suffered the loss of a loved one, suffered from depression or any other mental or emotional illness ever had to go through what I went thorugh so I started the radio show to help others and to destigmatize mental illness.
What made you decide to start your own business? How difficult was the decision?
Because Internet radio is so poular these days, starting your own radio program from home is not only possible, but it is easy to do if you have a great idea, wonderful guests and a laptop or desktop PC with highspeed Internet access. Having Skype helps too, but you can use a landline phone. In fact, my show is now going into syndication soon and it all started from my kitchen!
What were some of the challenges you faced in the beginning?
Getting good guests was a challenge at first, but now they find me and I rarely have to solicit guests. I am booked through January 2009!
How long did it take before you started making money?
I do not make money from doing the show currently but when we move to TalkZone in January 2009 and go into syndication I will be making money from advertising sales but money has never been my motivation for doing this. I know that sounds silly, but it is true. Making money now is only an added bonus. I'm just so glad that people are enjoying the show and that it provides them with the help that they need when they need it!
What do you love most about your business?
Helping people and talking to some of the top mental health and health experts in the world. Some of them have become very good friends and have helped me with my own issues for free. It's been a life changing experience.
What advice do you have for other WAHs and WAH wannabes?
If someone has a great idea for a radio show I urge them to go for it. If the show catches on they can go into syndication, sell ads and even create a revenue producing website. Our new website is being launched on November 16th of this year and we will have an online book store, a free ezine, and other items that can be downloaded for a minimal fee to help people with health and mental health issues. 25% of all the proceeds from these sales wil be going to NAMI (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill) at www.nami.org
One last thing
If you have ever had pain in your life you can turn it around simply by helping others who have been where you have been. Losing a child was devestating to me, but knowing that I have helped others who have walked in my shows has made my walk much easier.
