Ezine Publishing - Planning Your Ezine

Copyright Kit Lum. All rights in all media reserved.

If you’re running an online business owner or an affiliate marketer, one of the best ways to market your business is to build a list. One of the most popular ways to build a list is by publishing an ezine.

To be frank, hearing about it and thinking to yourself that it’s a great idea is one thing. But rolling up your sleeves and getting in there to start publishing an ezine is another thing altogether.

It’s easier said than done. From my personal experience, a fair bit of forethought needs to go into this idea before you should even get started.

1. Category of ezine

First off, you need to consider the question of what category of ezine you want to publish. Choose your category wisely. Your goal is to attract your target customers into your list.

Consider an ezine category that is closely related to your line of business. Consider also a topic area that you are familiar with. For example, if you’re an affiliate marketer, consider an ezine about affiliate marketing.

2. Frequency of publication

How often will you publish? Daily? Weekly? Fortnightly? Monthly? Publishing an ezine may appear to be easy but it is a time-consuming process.

If you tell your readers you will publish weekly, be sure it is a schedule you can keep. Start out with something you can handle rather than be stuck with something you can’t han

My advice is to start out with a frequency that allows you plenty of time to prepare your content. I started out with a monthly publication.

When I had mastered the tasks of producing a monthly ezine, I told my readers I will be going fortnightly. It took me a while to have the confidence to start publishing weekly.

Don’t attempt too much for a start. Be conservative. Go with a lower frequency until you’re confident you can do more.

3. Publishing format

You may choose to publish in one of several formats - text or HTML or a combination of both.

Text ezines are composed entirely as a text email message. While this is the simplest option, it may appear to be rather plain compared to HTML.

In HTML format, you can add colors and images to give your ezine a more interesting dimension.

Another way is to combine text with HTML, i.e. publish your ezine as a web page and send out the link to their readers.

4. Ezine layout and content

Think about what you would like to include in your ezine - the sections, the layout, the content. These form the basic fundamentals of your ezine so it is worth spending some time and thought.

The sections and layout are pretty static and are generally repeated in each issue of your ezine so you want to start with a good base to work from.

By making these decisions ahead of time, you can avoid making frequent and unnecessary changes to your ezine which might end up confusing your readers.

5. Knowlege about ezine publishing

Consider what you know about ezine publishing. It may be an exciting and very viable business tool when it’s in your head. But in order for your plan to materialize, you need a working knowledge of the tools and resources that go into building your list.

I’m not saying you have to be a publishing guru before you can start an ezine. But you do need to start out with some basics and then learn as you go along.

Well, I hope the above points will put you on the right track as you start your list building. To ensure your ezine becomes a reality and a success, planning ahead is always a good thing.

Wishing you success with your publishing.
